Return to Home: Behind the Scenes with Spoonflower Sr. Director Caroline Walker
Designing for Home
Home. The most powerful space you can create, centered around a family and its needs. It is the place where we find joy, celebrate, and gather to enjoy our lives. Leading Sales and Marketing at Spoonflower, I wake up every day thinking about how our teams introduce new shoppers to the brand and help customers discover the designs that meet the home where it is in its season of life, and even seasons to come.
Who You Are IS the Story of your Home
At Spoonflower, our wallpaper and fabric assortment truly tell the family’s story - who they are, what they love, and what being at home means to them. Prints that are distinctive, nostalgic, and “you” separate the mainstream design trends from the homeowner. This is simple, but important. In the same way a home exhibits pieces from traveling, houses china or silver that has been passed down, or displays art, heirlooms and antiques, wallpaper and fabric are symbolic of how you feel every time you see it.What Makes You Tick
Throughout my tenure with Spoonflower, I've had the pleasure of discovering our artists, their assortment, unique design aesthetics and specific point of view to incorporate in my own home. Everything from feminine florals and block prints to classic checks, plaids, and bold chintz brings my home to life.Beauty in the Everyday
While my days are spent reviewing digital marketing performance, sales pipeline activities, and refining our go-to-market strategy, the products we sell invoke a sense of comfort, joy, love and something special in the everydayness of raising my family and working from home. I may be cooking dinner, working in my office, enjoying a movie night, hosting an elaborate dinner party, or reading with my children before bed. Throughout the day to day, I am surrounded by beloved Spoonflower patterns on my walls, furniture, bedding, and window treatments. Beautiful textiles are the ultimate home luxury. It is my honor to connect our prints with families every day as they build out what makes home unique to them.A Jumping Off Point
In design, I believe in assessing your “anchor” pieces. What are the furnishings, rugs, art and lighting that may be keeping the space grounded? For example, one of my go-to design tricks is to use modern or whimsical art with traditional antiques and furnishings. It makes the home feel established and warm, but youthful, relevant, and functioning in today’s time and place.Hero Prints and Color Threads
Once you’ve decided what anchor pieces remain, think about a “hero print.” This can be funky, fun, and brave! If you have a bold chintz, lean into the multiple colors and find the common thread to bring to wallpaper, pillows, and even trim on the window treatments. You can even pattern drench with a print on both the walls and window treatments. At Spoonflower, I will use the Search bar with a query to see what serves up, and even “similar” designs once I have landed on a product detail page. I also gravitate to some of my favorite artists which I have outlined! Danika Herrick Whitney English Jen OwensColor as the Cornerstone
From a hero print, or anything you plan to repurpose, which ones make you happy and cheer you up? While I gravitate towards dramatic dark greens and blues in upholstery, yellow and gold tones are throughout my home, especially in wallcoverings. I find yellow underutilized in spaces, but very utilitarian as a neutral, and gives me a dopamine boost! If you’re a Nancy Myers fan, you’ll notice that she uses quite a bit of yellow on her movie sets. It is like being enveloped in a familiar and warm hug when you enter the room, but still leaves flexibility for bolder choices for art, furniture, windows and pillowsSampling Sets the Stage
While Spoonflower showcases several close ups on the Product Detail Pages, nothing stands up to a physical sample you can put on the wall, and pair with fabrics, furniture and art you’re planning to use. Invest the time and money to get a sample. It’s a zero-regret decision. When In Doubt, Hire Out
When I was first married, my husband was willing to take on more home projects, and as his career and work travel picked up, I had to start outsourcing. Wallpaper hanging is not for everyone, and some are more adept at following instructions than others. If you know that lining up a repeat and hanging the paper is not a strength, play to them, and find a hanger. At Spoonflower, we are members of the Wallpaper Association and can help you find one in your area!Design is Instinctual
At the end of the day, choosing what you love never goes out of style. Harness that feeling of “this is me,” trust your instincts, and know what is right for your home wil deliver the best design strategy.AUTHOR BIO
